When I got my DVD-RAM recorder on May 2004 I later spotted SILLY SYMPHONIES vol 2 and I purchased them and have enjoyed them ever since!! They are the forerunners of FANTASIA and they show the creative growth of the pioneering Disney artists! Now I got SILLY SYMPHONIES vol 1 and The shorts, COOKIE CARNIVAL, MUSICLAND, WHO KILLED COCK ROBIN?(There's a great caricature of May West in that short!), etc. make great use of music, performance, and art to enchant an audience and without any of the commercial nonsense that plagues the Disney movies of the 1990s and the 21st century! These are classic Disney, NOT Eisner, Katzenburg Disney!!Not every Silly Symphony is a gem. Ones like THE GOLDEN TOUCH and MOTHER GOOSE MELODIES show the artists made some mistakes in story and performance before they rose to excellance in THE UGLY DUCKLING! That cartoon is such a tearjerker and always make me cry! Disney's best version of an Anderson story!! Animaters such as Grim Natwick( designer of Betty Boop and Snow White) and Art Babbit showed what they could do in COOKIE CARNIVAL and COUNTRY COUSIN! Natwick animated the Cookie Girl heroine in CARNIVAL beautifully and the short is full of cookie invention! COUNTRY COUSIN has great animation of Abner the country mouse by Babbit and his acting could be an inspiration for Jerry the mouse in TOM and JERRY and other great mouse characters! It's great to compare these shorts to the SYMPHONY shorts in MORE SILLY SYMPHONIES vol 2! GODDESS OF SPRING is ambitious and makes great use of music while animater,Ham Luske struggles with animating Persephonie the goddess of Spring. As the cartoon progresses Persephonie improves in her animation and there is a great opera duet that includes her and her abducter Pluto( Hades)!!FANTASIA keeps coming to mind when watching these cartoons! I had to describe this vol 2 short since it's great for me to watch both volumes!! I'd much rather watch these cartoons then watch that lousy FANTASIA 2000 again!! I love the 1940 FANTASIA but the Eisner FANTASIA SUCKS!!! I got SILLY SYMPHONIES vol 1 from BLURAYS FOR CHEAP at the great price of $50.00 plus $3.99 for shipping and handling! If you can get the Max Fleischer POPEYE CARTOONS vol 1, 2, and 3 they have great jazz scores and were great competition to Disney in the 1930s! Glad to get these SILLY SYMPHONIES in 2013 when they were originally released in 2001! MAN, THE TIME SURE FLYS BY!!!Oh I just found the hidden short THE PRACTICAL PIG on the first disc of SILLY SYMPHONIES vol 1!
